In his 1982 foreword to the first, heavily abridged publication of Sylvia Plath’s Journals, Ted Hughes wrote that he had burned one of Plath’s last diaries because “(in those days I considered forgetfulness an essential part of survival).”
The gaslighting. “Everyone wanted to take away Roe v. Wade and I did it,” followed by a sexual assault conviction in civil court,” followed by “Women, I will be your protector.”
I’m so sorry you went through that toxic relationship, Emily, and grateful you’re able to write about it.
Hi, Emily. I just finished your book last week and I’ve been thinking about it almost every day since. I’ve always loved Plath, and I appreciate the seriousness with which you approach her work and her life. Thanks again for writing it.

I was reading the poem “Three Women” just now, and immediately noticed parallels between Plath and many of Joanna Newsom’s songs.
“Baby Birch” echoes a lot of “Three Women”, even the snake-like swan and the cussing goose.
I never thought of that! "Baby Birch" takes me apart every time I hear it. Have you ever watched that one live recording of it-- I think from 2010?
Yes, I cry every time 🥲 I am not built for such emotional depths!
Excellent read!
